30 Clubs in 30 Days: Colorado Rockies

colorado-rockies-logoKey offseason additions:

Wilton Lopez, Reid Brignac

Key offseason departures:

Jason Giambi

The Colorado Rockies were very bad last year. At one point they used a 4-man rotation with a 75 pitch count. Their best player was injured for most of the year and they had a very bad pitching staff. On top of all that, their manager, Jim Tracy, stepped down at the end of the season.

This season they will be under the helm of first year manager Walt Weiss. It will be though for him to turn a bad team that didn’t add much into a contending team. If he has any chance of this he needs Troy Tulowitzki to stay on the field and the pitching to be better. The Rockies don’t have a problem scoring runs, they scored the 3rd most in the National League, but they do have a problem with allowing them. Their pitching staff had a league worst 5.22 ERA this past season.

The Rockies traded for Wilton Lopez and resigned Jeff Francis this offseason. Lopez will help out in the bullpen but Francis is a number 3 or 4 starter at best. They need more pitching or they will never finish out of the bottom half of the West.

You should look for the Rockies to make some trades this season. They need pitching and should think about trading either Dexter Fowler or Carlos Gonzalez for top pitching prospects. This season will be a rough one for the Rockies.

Predicted Finish: 5th NL West
